Atheist fundamentalism is an oft-used snarl word by critics of atheism. It is most commonly applied to more outspoken atheists such as Richard Dawkins or Christopher Hitchens, making a direct comparison between them and religious fundamentalists. Whether the term has any real meaning is debatable, as atheism doesn't have a system of beliefs that one can fundamentally adhere to.

Huh?

Well thank for clearing up what a fundamentalist atheist is L O L

http://youtu.be/Q6HRX-dB_gg?t=2m28s

Yeah... not really funny, I actually think he's doing himself more of a disservice than anything else.

I'd argue the same line this thread has argued so far and I think calling people that go to a parody show fundamentalists is just playing into the haters' hands.

I don't know why people feel the need to go to these so-called "churches" even if it's only run by comedians, I can understand the social needs, but going to such a place every week? I know they say we're creatures of habit, but isn't this like some weird crossover between Münchausen syndrome & Stockholm syndrome where you feel theres something wrong with you if you don't congregate as a nagging habit left over after years of brainwashing Grin Grin

Grin Grin

On further reflection, I think the term “fundamental atheist” is a reaction by believers to certain atheists’ (apparent) intolerance of anything to do with religion.  As Faerie astutely points out, it’s a rhetorical device the purpose of which is to attempt side-lining atheist criticism by pulling the atheist to the believer’s own level.
