Of course electric cars run on electricity which is much more environmentally friendly, isn't it?

LOL!

But we're all forgetting that one group already admitted to this ... the stonecutters!

Lyrics
Who controls the British Crown?
Who keeps the metric system down?
We do, we do.
Who keeps Atlantis off the maps?
Who keeps the Martians under wraps?
We do, we do.
Who holds back the electric car?
Who makes Steve Guttenberg a star?
We do, we do.
Who robs cave fish of their sight?
Who rigs every Oscar night?
We do, we do!

If one looks at a petrol or diesel vehicle vs. an electric or hydrogen one in complete isolation, then the latter will be more environmentally friendly.  However, what manufacturers rarely do is inform one of the so-called “total environmental impact,” as suggested by benguela’s question.  This takes into account the complete energy, waste product and emission picture right from raw source (e.g. coal, crude oil, nuclear, etc.) all the way through refinement to consumption.  In this view, electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles come out worst.  Best are LPG-powered vehicles.

as Anacoluthon64 said it all depends on just how far back into the system one is will to go in doing the comparison.

The one area where an electric car does have a theoretical benefit is that the cleaner/more efficient one makes the
generation of electric power, the electric cars get that benefit almost instantly vs LPG cars where the only way to get the benefit of more efficient engines is to buy a new vehicle.
