A good quote.....

But that's the problem with all religions and philosophies when they become large enough to become organized: established bureaucratic power structures and privileges begin to speak louder than the original philosophies. Just about every Utopian idea ever conceived, no matter how benign initially, sooner or later fell into this trap. It's a mistake humans have been making over and over and over, and there is no end in sight.
Quite so, as depressing as it is. And it also goes thus with benevolent political and social visions. We have a great example right here in SA where Madiba’s dream opportunistically got hijacked and subverted by a conscienceless new class of self-aggrandising pirates. The only consolation is that complacency is ultimately its own reward.

I find an interesting observation in your comment Mefiante, albeit that I'm thinking a bit more broadly...

It would be great if everyone could just get along, we could avoid conflict and strife, and work together as humanity. However when we do not rock the boat, when we are too passive, the 'self aggrandising pirates' take over. So it can only work if absolutely everyone does it.

That's not going to happen, so we need, as we do in the world, a balance between being passive and being aggressive.

[He] breathed on Hogg-Enderby, bafflingly (for no banquet would serve, because of the known redolence of onions, onions) onions. “Onions” said Hogg.
