So I'm going to import some books from the JREF http://www.randi.org/, specifically Death from the Skies by Phil Plait and Flim Flam! by James Randi.
However, in the interest of saving some money and helping some fellow skeptics, I was wondering if anyone else wants something from the site, and is willing to split the shipping costs with me. They have two shipping options, $28.50 for the quick 6-10 day option, or $13.05 for the option where the arrival date isn't specified.

I'll then either ship it to you with a courier or if you're in Gauteng meet you somewhere.

Let me know if anyone is interested.

What a coincidence  Cool  I ordered the very same books on Saturday - all shipping is already paid (the slow boat).  I will see if I can halt the order and add your order to it.  I will let you know what I find-out as soon as I know.

Everyone else let us know if you'd like to join-in.  The shipping cost might increase slightly with more items (don't know for sure) but I'm sure it will still be a lot less than paying on your own.

Haha, that would be awesome AcinonyxScepticus. I'm after the signed version of Death from the Skies.

Oh dear, too late.  The JREF is so quick, they shipped on Saturday so I couldn't hold it.  When you add shipping and convert to rands you can get a terrible shock from the final price, so I hope that more people take this opportunity (I wish I could have).

Both books are available from Kalahari.net - just not a signed one like the one you're after, Mandarb - but I'm sure it's much cheaper than importing them from the USA.

Death from the Skies - R301.71 - Delivery time 10 days
Flim Flam - R294.91 - 24hr delivery

How do the prices compare to what you've paid?
James, were you after signed copies too?

Well, both books are $42, plus the shipping, 13.05, which at todays exchange rate is R550.50. So less money for a signed copy delivered at a later time.

To be honest, I had no idea they were signed copies (I can't tell from the website), I was just browsing through the shop.  The reasons I bought from the JREF were the following:

  • An opportunity to support the JREF with a purchase (I have previously supported the SGU and the RDF even if only in a small way).
  • An opportunity to get one of those super-geeky Randi dolls which I added to the order - not available elsewhere.

Well, both books are ... R550.50. So less money for a signed copy delivered at a later time.

... and that too. (Hindsight is 20-20 you know).

Don’t forget about the ±10% import duties you will need to pay upon delivery.  Including them makes the total price about the same, though you’d get an unsigned copy sooner.

Yeah I was wondering about that. If I ask them to mark it as a gift, will that circumvent the import duties?

I don’t know for absolute certain if marking it as a gift for the addressee will make any difference, but I somehow doubt it.  One is dealing with SARS here.  It might still be worth trying, though.

Will do so.

I'm going to put a deadline on this,so that we don't wait too long.
I'll place the order on Thursday night the 29th at 20:00. So anyone else let me know before then please.

So it turns out that as soon as you reach a certain point in either the amount, value or weight of the items you want to buy the slow boat option falls away. So it's cheaper to do it individually than as a group  Undecided

Anyway, my order is placed. Placed it yesterday afternoon, last night I got a email from the US Postal service that it's shipped. Quite quick really.
