The idea of horizontal prayer isn't my own, mind you. I can't remember who first came up with it.

Quick, someone needs to alert the Fire Brigade to this!  Preferably nationwide.  They will be thrilled to learn that they can do away with their protective gear and fight fires wearing nothing but Bibles and wooden crosses.

Truly, a magnificent, life-affirming revelation!

Well now I know exactly where to stash the cash and the drugs: Under a bible.

Edit: I mean, what drugs? hehe, stop looking at me like that...

Just for once, someone actually posted something meaningful on Facebook, namely this:

Debate promptly broke out: is the answer 9 or 1? It's one of those cases where BODMAS and PEMDAS disagree. As I understand it, those two acronyms are just mnemonics and must not be taken too literally: division and multiplication are of equal rank, and in this case the operations will be done from left to right, yielding 9.

Or is it 1? What say ye?

Incidentally, in a school textbook I saw the same thing last week that I was also taught at school, namely that the O in BODMAS stands for "of" (as in such constructions as "half of 6"). As far as I know, this is wrong. Is it, and if so, what can we do to slay that little dragon for once and for all?

The correct answer is 9.  As you point out, multiplication and division are of equal rank and must therefore be evaluated in the order in which the expression is parsed: 6÷2(2+1) = 6÷2×3 = (6÷2)×3 = 3×3 = 9.  To see why, replace “(2+1)” with a symbol, say “x”.

As for the “O” in BODMAS, it stands for “orders,” as in exponentiation, which takes precedence over multiplication and division.

No doubt much argument for the answer being 1 is being advanced, but it’s unconvincing.  The rules are clear and there really isn’t any ambiguity, just a poor grasp of how the precedence rules work that will make for controversy.  I seriously doubt any seasoned mathematicians will dispute that the answer is 9.

9. Left to right because x and ÷ are of equal precedence. The end.

EDIT: I guess this throws people because in school the sums are always written to eliminate ambiguity and thus USUALLY in school questions you are safe to evaluate N(X) first.
