However, it seems that we are getting a pledge and the only thing that is up for debate is the content of the pledge.

I agree with Johan. Although most of the proposed pledge is pretty harmless and will probably be nothing more than a waste of time - I have a major problem with the last line - "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" ("God Bless Africa" in Xhosa); I have a problem with the SA National Anthem for the same reason!

Two reasons I can think of right up front is 1. It discriminates against those rational people that rate the probability of the existence of imaginary sky fairies and tokoloshe's as very highly unlikely. 2. They are a little ambiguous as to which one of the many we are requiring the attention of - I guess it depends on who is reading it?! :)

the pledge will inevitably lose force and meaning through daily repetition and produce mostly good, obedient little robots.

Read about Emma Martens who objected to the same nonsense in the US with regards to the reciting of their pledge - http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/local/article/0,1299,DRMN_15_5709185,00.html or you can hear her being interview on FreeThrought Radio http://ffrf.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=266878#. In the interview she mentions the same thing - kids mess around and finish homework etc. during the pledge.
