Last evening while being subjected to SWMBO’s drive to catch as much news as possible on “The Wedding” one of the news channels had an insert on the storms in the USA. This opened with an interview with one of the residents who had survived. The numbers (substantial) of those killed and missing was mentioned but the main drive in the interview was the mercy of her god who had protected her. Once this miracle had been stressed the cameras pulled back and the beneficiary of the largess of her lord was shown hand in hand with a group giving praise (praying). The camera now pans to the devastation in the area while the voice over continues to inform the viewers of the numbers known killed and missing. In the background one can hear the group of self-important, egotistical idiots continuing to give thanks for the love of their god while if the voice over is correct many people are still trapped in the wreckage in the surrounding areas. Prayer before action!!
This tendency of the woo-ridden and much of the press to see the survival in these disasters of a minority as miraculous never ceases to stun me. Are those who survive of purer heart than those who die? If so why do young children die? These and many other questions are never answered by those putting this rubbish forward.
A similar trend runs through those miracles that come about as the result of the prayers of others or the individual themselves. Two million pray to be the winner of the lottery, the one who wins proclaims a miracle for the others god works in mysterious ways.
Should the press be asked to give a better explanation of their conclusions regarding these miracles?

The really telling question that is never asked on such shows is who’s ultimately responsible for disasters of this kind occurring in the first place.  If you believe in an omniscient, omnipotent personal creator god who made the universe and everything in it, the conclusion is logically inescapable: the same god who saves you also brought the misfortune down on you to begin with, either directly or by proxy.  We have no qualms about bringing company and corporation CEOs to book for their own misdeeds or those of their subordinates, so why should this god magically be exempt?  Assuming his existence with his alleged attributes (omnipotence, omniscience, etc.) and his status as creator of all, it’s all the more reason to point the finger at him for causing death and distress among his children.

But the rubber-duck syndrome is eternally indomitable among True Believers™.

Perhaps it is a kind of survivor's guilt?

"I survived therefor I must be important and God must have a plan with me", is better than "I was one lucky sumbeech wasn't I?" - easier to process somehow?

ETA: btw She Who must Be Obeyed is awesome, learned something for today, now I can relax and enjoy Friday  Cheesy  Such a pity for Kate and William that their moment clashes with the Highlanders and Blues....

You very well may be onto something there, GCG.  After all, who’s going to be left over to challenge your claimed special status and on what possible grounds?  So the rationale is that those who died were bad eggs, those who escaped unscathed were holy souls, and the maimed and injured ones, well, the Big Jeffrey Dahmer in the Sky wasn’t so sure about them.

Or maybe it’s the other way around:  The ones who died were so good that they had to be delivered into heaven by overnight courier, while the unharmed are the bad ones who need to suffer life on Earth for just a bit longer.

Sigh.  Theology is such a precise science.  Using its methods, you can establish anything you want.

"God needed him/her by his side and decided to call him/her home..."

Sending them to earth was a mistake. That or the parents were really vile and needed dire punishment.
