Prayers in Joburg for elections
2011-05-12 13:12
Johannesburg - Dozens of religious leaders gathered in Johannesburg on Thursday to pray for a peaceful May 18 election.

A procession led by the Salvation Army band made its way from Johannesburg Stadium to the Standard Bank Arena, where the prayer was expected to be held.

The parade was joined by Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane and Independent Electoral Commission chair Brigalia Bam. Interfaith songs were played over a loudspeaker as guests were escorted to their seats in the arena.

When the procession arrived, people danced and sang songs of praise and worship.

Leaders from seven different religions were given a minute each to say a prayer.

"We assemble here today inspired, guided and united by our faith to pray for a peaceful and democratic election," said Reverend Vukile Mehana. Today we all stand before God as one."

Police and security guards kept an eye on proceedings.

Seven different religions; were they all praying to the same god? If not, which one is going to keep the elections safe and peaceful? What if they start fighting over who's going to do it? Clearly, none of them have thought of this - they could be making thing worse!  Tongue
On the topic of the elections, here's a winning strategy - scare the crap out of the gullible!

"The ancestors will turn their backs against you and you will be bad luck forever if you leave the ANC unhappy," he said in Phola, outside Lichtenburg.

Discworld comes to mind, with all the gods playing games and arguing who are revered most.....

My thoughts were more along the lines of: "O (insert name of diety) don't let (insert name of political party) be caught cheating in the elections!"

What's more disturbing is now they think their prayers will have been answered...
