I admire the old barrel dwelling, authority snubbing  eccentrics as much as anyone, but really, enough is enough. Some new material would be great for a change! Tongue  Wink

Surely you mean “till the fat lady signs”.  And she’s not so fat, I’ll have you know. Tongue  Would you step into the glow of my lamp here and let me see if you’re an honest man?

That would be “still”.  It goes back to a “debate” with the Tellybanana (insofar as “debate” is the correct term) who seemed to insist that everything must be precisely explicable, even if the explanation invokes some or other god.  Rwenzori’s curt response was that “shit happens,” a succinct way of saying that many problems simply involve too many imprecise variables to yield to a Laplacian determinism as Tellybanana was implying is forever possible.  (The obvious problem being that such a conception of reality is in principle unfalsifiable because it can always shift the goalposts by claiming that any intellect not capable of grasping reality fully is just not omniscient enough.)  Because I understand and identify with the universality of Rwenzori’s insightful retort, I have adopted and repeated it here in offbeat Greek.

He-he ... but heavens no! Shocked I was just using the expression to point out that the voting ain't done yet. (It is, incidentally,  coming along very nicely: 3 yeas, 0 nays and 6 too-polite-to-says. Tongue)

Would you step into the glow of my lamp here and let me see if you’re an honest man?
Brutally. Bring it on, Florence. Cool

Okay, honestly now:  What makes you think that popular opinion will sway me, even with thousands of “yeas” and hundreds of “too-polite-to-says”?  And yet more honestly, is that what the voting option actually says, “I’m too polite to say”? Lips Sealed

Here, have another onion.  And step into the light some more.  For there be significance in onions and a lamp as an honest-man detection device.  Honestly. Cheesy

Because the voting results will niggle away and fester in the back of your mind, causing sleepless nights and the eventual insight that only change will bring sweet rest again.  Evil No not really ... after all, we are somewhat limited with our persuasive devices on line, when there is no real argument supporting our subjective preferences Cry.

(The onion and lamp reference is unfortunately lost on me. But it sounds interesting ... let's have another clue? )

[W]e are somewhat limited with our persuasive devices on line, when there is no real argument supporting our subjective preferences Cry.
Point, but what’s equally interesting is that when we feel thus powerless, we tend to look to others for support, hence, for example, this poll.  Social animals seeking security through group identities is what we are.  Even the tongue-in-cheek part of your reply already assumes that peer pressure is a valid means of persuasion—as in FIFO.

But it sounds interesting ... let's have another clue?
Something mentioned in this thread’s OP.

Ah, I've got it eventually: Diogenes of Sinope, the famous cynic. He lived on a diet of onions, and went around with a lamp in broad daylight, looking for an honest man. Angel

I was going to vote nay but then I thought It's her own business you presumptuous old git illustrates both the nay and the reason for the nay quite nicely.

Little did I know it meant I’m too polite to say  Embarrassed   ~ That is what happens when one runs into humptydumptyness I guess  Wink

I won't change my vote now, but just want to add that while sticks and stones may break my bones, avatars and sigs will never phase me... I hardly notice them.

Damn straight.

I voted for my preference: I like seeing new stuff in sigs. But that don't mean you have to give 2 shits.

ps. Yes, I know, "doesn't".
